10-year yield climbs to 4.80%, highest since October 2023; stocks fall, led by the Dow

In Tuesday's session, the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.3%, gold settled at $4,439.00 an ounce, and WTI crude rose to $93.03 a barrel.

Stocks

The broad S&P 500 retreated 0.58% to 7,673.52. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined 0.32%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.18% to 52,786.07.

The S&P 500 has gained 12.1% so far in 2026 and stands 1.6% below its record close of 7,798.99, set on August 13, 2026. The Cboe Volatility Index, which tracks expected swings in the S&P 500 over the next 30 days, rallied to 15.72, below its long-run average of about 19.4.

Rates

The 10-year Treasury yield inched higher 2 basis points to 4.80%, its highest level since October 2023. The 2-year yield, which is more sensitive to expectations for Federal Reserve policy, edged up 2 basis points to 4.39%.

That left the 10-year yield 41 basis points above the 2-year. Freddie Mac's latest weekly survey put the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.71% (September 3). The 3-month Treasury bill yielded 3.94%.

Currencies

The euro eased 0.07% to $1.1614 in the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, while the dollar fell 0.29% against the yen to ¥154.30 and the British pound inched higher to $1.3546. Overall, the dollar strengthened against four of the nine major currencies we track.

Commodities and bitcoin

WTI crude climbed 1.7% to $93.03 a barrel, while Brent, the international benchmark, advanced 1.7% to $97.92 a barrel.

U.S. natural gas futures dropped 2.0% to $2.916 per million British thermal units. Gold retreated 0.8% to $4,439.00 an ounce, and silver edged up 0.4% to $66.30 an ounce. Copper, often watched as a barometer of industrial demand, advanced 2.2% to $6.739 a pound.

Bitcoin lost ground 0.7% to $78,549.

U.S. home prices climbed to 1.5% in June from 1.2% in the prior month. That is down from 1.9% a year earlier. Over the past 10 years it has ranged from -0.3% (May 2023) to 20.8% (March 2022).

What it measures. The 12-month change in the S&P Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index, which tracks repeat sales of the same single-family homes.

Why it matters. Home values are the largest source of wealth for many American households, and they feed directly into affordability for first-time buyers.
